Stop sign

Roll the windows down
hands feeling the wind
catching raindrops
as we drove by that lonely road
and the scenes getting smaller
from the side view mirror.
Someone’s singing of celebration
and we sang along
as thunder rumbled up in the clouds.
Hearing you laugh was amazing
and the endless conversations
were what kept us going.
We stopped on a sign and you took a picture
but it’s your face that’s
forever etched in my memory.
You asked if we can go farther than this.
Looking out to the road ahead,
I took your cold hands,
“Farther or further?” I whispered.
You looked at me then and smiled.
And we both knew the answer.
Those are crazy times, the good kind.
And I’m grateful we are still living them.
